Disrepair is a significant issue in the private rented sector, as many
of the houses available were built a long time ago. But when private renters
have problems with disrepair or bad housing conditions, they can find it difficult
to get them fixed.
The law on eviction means that, after the first six months of a tenancy,
landlords don’t have to give a reason if they want to evict their tenant. Some
rogue landlords may take a complaint about the state of their house as a reason
to evict a tenant. This leaves many renters afraid to complain about the living
conditions they find themselves in.
